An Ayurvedic Approach to Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD)

Did you know - one in ten women in the world are diagnosed with PCOD? It is an endocrinal disorder that affects young women during the reproductive years. The condition is also known for raising the risk of other ailments like infertility, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Although there is no cure for PCOD currently, Ayurveda holds the power to ease out its symptoms. But before we get to that, let’s understand this condition in detail.

Meaning of PCOD as per Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, PCOD takes place when Kapha blocks the Artava Vaha Srotas (channels of circulation) and interrupts the movement of Apana Vata. This leads to an imbalance in the Vata that goes onto affect the pelvic area and causes various symptoms.

Symptoms of PCOD

Some well-known symptoms of PCOD include:

•    Sudden weight gain and difficulty losing weight
•    Acne
•    Excess hair on the face and body. Women start getting deeper, thicker facial hair and more hair on the belly, back, and chest.
•    Pelvic Pain
•    Irregular Periods, the most commonly occuring symptom that varies from woman to woman. Some have no periods at all while others face excessive bleeding.
•    Fertility issues or trouble getting pregnant
•    Anxiety or Depression

Watch out for these symptoms. If you’ve noticed any of these, it’s best to get it checked by a doctor.

Dealing with the PCOD Problem Naturally

Here are some lifestyle alterations for PCOD that you can make:

1.    Physical Health

It is extremely important to incorporate some kind of exercise or general physical activity into your everyday routine, even if it’s for half an hour. Exercising on a regular basis helps in burning calories and reduces the abnormal weight gain associated with PCOD. With a little bit of physical activity, you can also balance the metabolic rates of the body.

2.    Changes in the Diet

Avoid extreme intake of energizers like coffee or tea. Instead, you can replace them with lighter versions such as black coffee or herbal/green tea. Kapha (Ayurvedic Dosha) promotes the consumption of light or warm foods that do not sit heavily in the body and can be easily disgusted.

Go for fresh fruits and green vegetables as they can have a great positive impact. Thick foods like pasta, deep-fried, bread, hard cheese, and bread should be avoided as much as possible. The more high-fiber carbs and nutritious foods you include in your diet, the better it is. Don’t forget to stabilize the intake of carbs with healthy fats and protein.

3.    Don’t Stress, Relax

Women with PCOD often suffer from mood swings, emotional eating, and stress. To deal with this problem, adopt a happy and positive view of life. The more you stress over it, the more it will affect the quality of Kapha in your body. Furthermore, it can severely affect your self-esteem and confidence.

Switch to meditation and indulge in some deep-breathing exercises or pursue a hobby that you’re truly passionate about.
