Effective Ayurvedic Remedies to Treat Sinusitis Naturally

Sinusitis is a condition that affects the tissue surrounding the sinuses. It is characterized by an inflammation of this tissue that can cause infection, which further leads to other symptoms like mucus accumulation and a painful sensation.

Sinus infections are often caused by viruses and bacteria that cause colds, and their treatment includes antibiotics and antiviral drugs. However, there are also many natural, herbal remedies and Ayurvedic supplements that are effective against this disease, such as foods that you can incorporate in your diet, decongestant nasal sprays, and aromatic essential oils.

What are the Causes of Sinusitis?

The nasal cavity contains hollow spaces to allow air to pass through, called sinuses. When the mucous membrane present in the nasal cavity gets inflamed, it restricts the passages, causing congestion.

As a result, the sinuses get clogged and accumulate fluid, bacteria or other germs that cause infection. Sinus infection and facial pain are often linked to, and are typically caused by these commonly occurring bacteria -

  • Streptococcus pneumoniae
  • Streptococcus pyogenes
  • Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Staphylococcus aureus

Symptoms of Acute and Chronic Sinusitis

First, let us take a look at the common symptoms of this infection -

  • Cold and cough that worsens or doesn’t heal
  • Excessive mucous secretion
  • Reduced sense of taste and smell
  • Fever and fatigue
  • Headache and earache
  • Difficulty in breathing (often due to congestion)
  • Pressurized feeling on eyes and the face that may be accompanied by pain

Although some of these symptoms are also observed in common cold and asthma, doctors may narrow the condition down to an acute or a chronic sinus infection if these symptoms persist even after ten days.

For acute sinusitis, the patient may be suffering from two or more of the symptoms mentioned above and the nasal mucous secretion may be thicker and green or yellow in color.

In chronic sinusitis, these symptoms have persisted for weeks, even months, along with the following additional symptoms -

  • Recurrent fatigue
  • Unpleasant breath
  • Toothache
  • Face feels blocked and swollen
  • Pus gets accumulated in the nasal cavity

Extremely Effective Ayurvedic Remedies that Treat Sinus Infections

Take a look at some of the various herbs and spices that fight against sinusitis -

  • Vitamin C-enriched foods - Amla, citrus fruits, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. that contain good amounts of Vitamin C are great for the immune system and keep nasal infections at bay. Amla is particularly a great Ayurvedic immunity booster that works perfectly for this purpose.
  • Ginger - Ginger tea with honey soothes cold and cough. It also alleviates other cold related symptoms.
  • Water - Keeping your body hydrated is one of the simplest ways of flushing out toxins and germs from your body. For better results, drink no less than a quarter glass every couple of hours.
  • Onions & Garlic - These are also effective in improving the immune system.
  • Vegetable Broth - Hot soups, stews, and broths are helpful for the respiratory system as they provide some much-needed minerals to the body and give relief to the nasal cavity.
  • Horseradishes - These are pungent and work to stimulate the nasal cavity. They are even more effective with a dash of lemon.

Steer Clear of these Foods and Beverages!

Make sure you reduce the consumption of the following:

  • Refined Flour - Refined flour and other processed foods increase mucus production and, therefore, cause more congestion in the nasal cavity.
  • Dairy items - Milk and items that contain dairy products also result in more mucus production.
  • Salt - Too much salt reduces the body’s water levels, and we want to increase water intake, so avoid extra salty foods.
  • Sugar - Excessive sugar intake reduces the number of white blood cells that are responsible for battling infection.
  • Fruit juices - Eat whole fruits and vegetables wherever possible instead of only drinking their juices. This is because whole fruits and vegetables contain much more Vitamins and minerals than their filtered juices.
